Gluing of cases is an established process, that has hardly changed over years. Glue application is done in classic glue lines by help of electro pneumatic application heads. Since there is an increasing need for cost cutting to manufacturers of cases, Baumer hhs looked for a way to reduce adhesive. The starting point for cost cutting is the amount of glue applied per case. You can not simply reduce the width of the glue line, because height differences in the material and pressing force could then not be adjusted.

Case study Case Erector 2

A special-design machine produced collapsible cases at relatively high machine speed. In this project we assembled a customized system in cooperation with the machine manufacturer. Because of huge quantities and implementation of 80 application heads the customers emphasized a durability and reliability of the heads. This led to use of pure electrically switching HME-500 application heads, which perfectly match the requirement of reliability and durability.

Folding cartons, gusseted wallets and boxes are often enhanced with glue strips, that are covered with silicon tape. The user can remove the tape before final closure and press the glue flaps. To apply glue lines onto the product there are 2 possible ways. The conventional way is a transfer process, with pre application of pressure sensitive adhesive to a silicon tape which is then affixed to the board. Disadvantage of this process is high cost of silicon tape. Moreover you can not influence type of glue and thickness of coating.

In everyday life you can find many examples for products glued with fugitive. Credit cards are glued onto the letter when sent by post. In this case it is important that no glue residues remain on the card. Also the letter should be unharmed after removing the card. Fugitives can often be found on advertising letters that are meant to be opened by customer. Also for this product the paper must not tear.

The automotive industry requires high reliability and operational availability of manufacturing equipment. Thanks to special design of Baumer hhs melters, they allow for gentle melting process of the hot melt, since it could crack when processed inproperly. In the parts carrying glue there are special high temperature sealings, to ensure durability even with temperatures above 200°C. The even application of glue lines can be acchieved with gear pumps, that have been designed for this special purpose.

Gluing of transparent foils with dispersions often gets to its boundaries. An established way of production is gluing the windows by help of dispersion via nozzles or by printing block gluers. The faster a process, the shorter are pressing cycles within the machine. The cold glue thus does not have enough time, for intrusion into the products surface.

Manufacturers of mailing products can differentiate themselves on competitive markets by invention of innovative products. Existing folding machines allow to conquer new markets or increase existing business by integration of additional functions to the machine. The new gluing of products into title pages or brochures is an ideal addition, that enhances classical mailing products. This products – usually made on saddle stitchers– ensure for profitable work load of the saddle stitcher and account for improved customer loyalty. Not only the print provides information, but also the product, that may contain much more thanks to modern technology. It doesn’t matter whether it is CD’s, product samples, phone cards or other objects placed into a title page or advertising brochure – they only have to be flat.

Case study CD Case

The glued CD-cover especially with low circulation is an inexpensive alternative to standard plastic jewel cases. The print cover is manufatured on a folder gluer, with gluing done by a Baumer hhs cold glue system. By help of 4 hotmelt dots the plastic insert is glued to the hinged, printed cover. Since the gluing base often is a high quality, printed surface, CD-packers often use pressure sensitive adhesives. By the HM-500 application heads even the challenging, sometimes tailing adhesive is applied in dot mode with a high application quality. This is eminently important, since glue dots are highly visible through the transparent plastic.

Case study Post Card Onsert

Adhesive application of postcards or small advertising brochures into magazines is not newsworthy. But so far you needed an additional step, in which the magazine ran through the saddle stitcher after printing, only to place postcards with a card feeder. This was mandatory, since printing machines were too fast for any inline glue process. With introduction of the purely electrical HME-500 application head series, there was for the first time a head that is able to apply intermittent glue lines at full speed of the printing machine. Even dots can be applied at high speed.

The coating head is based on the proven and patented Baumer hhs application heads. Thanks to their integrated pneumatic heads they can switch extremely fast and are robust and compact at the same time. Even at maximum machine speed you can now apply intermittent adhesives. Continuous coating with highest accuracy in glue distribution and dosage are no problem any more. The combination of materials with surface treatments allow for highest application accuracy.

The common carton closure by tape is becoming replaced by direct gluing with hot melt. You can flexibly select the type of hot melt depending on later storage and conditions. This is an advantage especially with freezer packaging or storage under hard conditions. Gluing of cartons is also a smart alternative to staples. Thanks to a bigger adherend surface you will reach considerably higher stability and the slow process of stapling can be replaced by inline gluing.

You can do without premium gasket material and without laborious pre-treatment of the surfaces, since the gasket sticks even to difficult surfaces this way. Glue application with Baumer hhs application heads and controllers is very reliable. In some cases it makes sense, though, to check where glue has been applied and – on the other hand– whether glue can be found in forbidden areas. With increasing machine speed there is no chance anymore for manual glue control. Qulitiy control can be enhanced by sensors. Which sensor is the best depends on many factors. Besides from type of glue and your product, limiting factors could be size of machine and progress in the folding process.

When opening tins for example of peanuts, sharp edges may hurt users. To reduce the risk of gash, a line of glue is applied at the rated break point. It widens the edge and thus „disarms“ it. The lid is rotated within the machine. Then a line of glue is applied.

Things can go wrong in processing of package inserts for Pharma products: When single sheets in English language are found in the French folding carton. Or after folding the package inserts open up again. Optic check instruments can foreclose any kind of trouble.
In the process the biggest risk is at the end of the chain: at the print finisher. Grab samples that may be adequate elsewhere, must be replaced by systematic verification. For this reason Baumer hhs systems combine application of glue- and folding aid with glue monitoring and code verification to a system with central administration.

Case Study Gluing in Folding Plate

For the production of simple mailings you can use Baumer hhs Inplate application heads on virtually any folding machine. Usually the heads are mounted on the 3rd plate and place glue dots to close a two time roll fold. Gluing is done within the fold plate, with application heads mounted on folding plate ribs or the plate stop. It is a high quality dot application, because the dot will be applied at the stand still of the sheet. There will be no tailing or contamination in the plates or the machine. Since application heads are mounted on the folding plate, the head will be moved together with the plate stop: It always remains perfectly adjusted.
